He said/she said: Fashion is just clothing
Admit it. We've all done it. You're walking down the street one day and you see it. It could have been socks and sandals. It could have been armpit stains. It could have been - heaven forbid! - Crocs. But whatever it was, it was an unforgivable fashion disaster.
TODAY'S SPONSOR:I know it's rude and judgmental, but as much as we hate to admit it, we have all judged someone based on their clothes. And as much as we hate to admit it even more, someone has judged us based on our clothes.
As the saying goes, the clothes make the man (or woman).
Our clothes are the first thing people see about us. They are the first impression and often the only impression we get to give. Clothing is an indicator of who you are as a person. It reveals not just our tastes in fashion, but our personalities, our philosophies on life. It's obvious that someone wearing Yeezys and an Air Jordan sweatshirt looks at the world much differently than someone wearing Chuck Taylors and socks with slices of pizza printed on them.
Every piece of clothing contains a stereotype and an attitude. Fashion houses do not sell brands, they sell lifestyles. Brands like HUF, with their pot-leaf socks, are edgy and rebellious. Vaunted designers like Chanel and Armani give off class and cosmopolitan haughtiness.
And let's face it; judging each other's clothes was inevitable. Making fun of each other is humanity's oldest pastime, and ever since Adam and Eve put on those fig leaves, clothing has been a target. I'm sure that Oog mocked Grunt for wearing a garish leopard skin to the mammoth hunt. I'm sure that Cleopatra rolled her eyes when she saw that Mark Antony's toga was SO last dynasty.
Clothing determines status; not just one's wealth, but one's place in the cosmos.
Henry David Thoreau once said, "It is an interesting question how far men would retain their relative rank if they were divested of their clothes."
Thoreau is right, 160 years later. President-elect Donald Trump likes Brioni clothes. On Brioni's website, a three-piece suit goes for $5,250. Trump's name is a byword for outrageous wealth. Take away the fancy outfits, and what do you have?
Yes, it's mere covering to protect us from the elements
There's an age-old adage that says, "Clothes make the man (or woman)."
In today's day and age, does this still hold true? Do your clothes and fashion sense really affect who you are?
The answer is clearly no. Even though what a person wears may provide glimpses into that person's character, clothes do not ultimately define who he or she is.
In my closet, I have a variety of clothes. Depending on the situation and where I'm going, I'll pick out a different outfit to wear. Going to school? I'm putting on my uniform. Hanging out with friends? I'm rocking a nice sweatshirt, a pair of jeans and sneakers. Staying home? Definitely some snug pajamas for the win. A party or dance? You can find me in a nice blouse/skirt combo or a black prom dresses uk. Volleyball practice? See me in a T-shirt reading "Weird is a side effect of Awesome."
Though I wear different clothing at different times, I am always the same person. Changing the color or design or style of a piece of fabric I put over my skin to keep myself warm does not change how I think or act as a person.
There are some instances where things can be inferred about a person from his or her fashion, however. For example, if someone is always wearing designer clothing, it's probably safe to say that that person is well off. If a person has a shirt reading, "Me? Sarcastic? Never," then it doesn't take a detective to make the assumption that he or she is sarcastic. In the case of my T-shirt saying "Weird is a side effect of Awesome," you would be able to correctly guess that I consider myself both weird and awesome.
These predictions might not always be right, however, so it's safer not to assume things about a person based on his or her clothing. Several people can wear the same clothing, but have completely different personalities.
No matter what fashion or clothing is on the outside of a person, it cannot change or determine anything about what is inside that person.
